Advisory Committees

The OpenSSL Corporation Advisory Committees.

The OpenSSL Corporation has established two advisory bodies — the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) and the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to strengthen governance and ensure that decisions reflect the priorities of its diverse communities. Each committee is composed of elected representatives from the OpenSSL Communities: Academics, Committers, Distributions, Individuals, Large Businesses, and Small Businesses.

— The Communities

Six communities, one ecosystem.

Each committee draws one elected representative from each of the six OpenSSL Communities.

Academics

The Academics community comprises scholars, researchers, students, academic institutions, university departments, and affiliated research organisations. This group contributes to the advancement of cryptographic research, facilitates knowledge exchange, and fosters structured collaboration between academia and the broader security industry to support innovation and informed development.

Committers

The Committers consists of developers granted commit privileges based on their active and meaningful contributions to the OpenSSL Foundation and the OpenSSL Corporation projects. These individuals are responsible for reviewing, approving, and integrating code and documentation changes, ensuring that all contributions meet quality and security standards.

Distributions

The Distributions comprises maintainers of operating systems and significant software packages that integrate projects from the OpenSSL Foundation and the OpenSSL Corporation.

Individuals

The Individuals group is composed of independent contributors, developers, and users who engage with projects from the OpenSSL Foundation and the OpenSSL Corporation in a personal capacity. These participants contribute through code development, documentation, feedback, testing, and advocacy, each playing an important role in advancing the quality and scope of security and privacy tools.

Large Businesses

The Large Businesses group comprises enterprises with 100 or more employees. These organisations rely on the OpenSSL Foundation and the OpenSSL Corporation projects for robust security solutions at scale. Their participation helps influence the development of projects, ensuring they meet the demands of large-scale operations while contributing to long-term security and performance improvements.

Small Businesses

The Small Businesses group includes companies with fewer than 100 employees. These organisations rely on the OpenSSL Foundation and the OpenSSL Corporation projects for robust security and privacy tools at scale. Their involvement ensures that the projects continue to serve the needs of smaller enterprises, contributing valuable insights into practical, resource-conscious implementations and fostering innovation in secure software practices.

— How representation works
